Steve Smerdon began research as a PhD student in the York Structural Biology laboratory in the UK. As a post-doc in the US at Yale University with Tom Steitz he studied the structure/function of DNA polymerases, including HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. He then returned to the UK to start his own laboratory at the NIMR where he is now joint head of the Molecular Structure Division. Steve’s major focus is now on the basic mechanisms of regulated assembly of DNA-damage response (DDR) complexes through the activity of phospho-dependent binding modules on one hand, and DDR and cell-cycle kinases on the other. The goal is to develop a molecular picture of phospho-networks in the DDR with a view to understanding how genetic aberrations lead to disease and how they may be targeted for therapeutic intervention.
